On occasion you may come across such objects. Coffins? Vaults? Doors? Well, these are actually two examples (of several in this graveyard) of Robert H. Sipes' patented "Grave-Covers" [filed Feb. 13; patented Mar. 9 and Jul. 13, 1875]. They are made of zinc and also could have sockets at the head and foot to place marble markers and aid it preserving them from the elements. These covers also included a basin in the middle (missing lid on right) for dirt and flowers to be placed therein, or sealed (only one here still having its lid on the left). These are child-sized to cover their small mounds, but could come in adult size as well. Shiny granite is nice and all, but they don't made grave adornments like they used to! ~~💀~~
