gracehazelphotography | g r a c e h a z e l | It’s so lovely when things work out. To see a final product after many challenging variables.
New film type, freshly mixed chems, borrowed camera... yet these are straight film scans, no editing whatsoever.
The satisfaction is my reward, I suppose. It’s not easy what I attempt... no model, no assistant, no hair or makeup person, or permission, as I’m typically trespassing and am constantly on the lookout, hiding from creeps, land owners, and in this case, grumpy gardeners.
I often feel like a wild animal, trying to quickly sip a taste of the eternal fountain without being spotted by human. Truly, the animal in me is very present when I’m creating, which somehow translates into my images, and I think that is a good thing, since I am always trying to melt the worlds between the human form and nature’s forms, where shapes become each other.
I use film, a light meter, self timer, tripod, and myself as my model.
This day, I was feeling extra emotional and needed to take these photos. I finally got to my favorite trees and it started to dump buckets of rain. I began to panic, it was the kind of rain that brings on floods, yet I took a deep breathe and knew this was my chance to have my way with this tree, nobody would be around in this storm. I turned around to a horizontal branch resembling a hand that was the perfect height of my tripod. Placing my umbrella in the palm of the branch I created a spot for my camera to see me and stay dry.
And thus began the dance.
