Penny is learning her flights! Yes, she has several broken tail feathers- she had stress bars on them prior to coming to us and they broke in the process. But she is also currently molting, so she should replace them soon! #bird #birds #birdflying #birdflight #raptor #raptortrainer #falcon #falcons #raptors #kestrel #americankestrel #animals #animal #animalsofinstagram #animalambassador #elite_raptors #cwc

Extremely fast dives help peregrine falcons manoeuvre to catch agile prey! using detailed computer simulations, Oxford University research has revealed why falcons dive at their prey using the same steering laws as man-made missiles. Published in PLOS Computational Biology, researchers from Oxford’s Department of Zoology use computer simulations of peregrine falcon attacks to show that the extreme speeds reached during dives from high altitudes enhance the raptors’ ability to execute manoeuvres needed to successfully attack agile prey that would otherwise escape. Professor Graham Taylor and postdoctoral student Robin Mills, alongside colleagues from the University of Groningen, built a physics-based computer simulation of bird flight that pits falcons against prey. The team had previously shown that falcons attack their prey using the same steering rules as man-made missiles. #birdsofprey #falcons #peregrinefalcons #birdflight #science #zoology #ComputationalBiology #Biology @oxfordzoology

Blue jay and more importantly, leaf buds! It doesn’t matter what the weather does now (10 cm more snow *cough*), the trees have spoken and they’re calling for spring! 😉

Chickadee musings: Earlier this winter I had the opportunity to watch a sleeping great horned owl for a while. I found a suitable blind (aka some trees and shrubbery) at a distance at which I would not disturb the owl and could comfortably settle in for a while. I didn’t expect much, it being daytime, but one interesting observation was that of multiple chickadees flitting precariously close to that dangerous maw and chirping excitedly in what I believe may have been an attempt to pester the predator bird so that he would rethink this spot to roost in the future. While he was very high up in a tree that provided reasonable camouflage, his perch was also quite exposed. The owl cracked an eye at them occasionally when they got especially close, but otherwise did not stir. Perhaps he was used to this behavior, but I was still surprised to see the small songbirds taking such risks. The chickadees were bold, I suspect due to confidence in their own speed (in addition to the owl’s sleepy disinterest - something that would change by dusk). I left that owl sleeping and he did in fact move his roost when I checked on him a few days later. While I can’t say for sure it was the chickadees (he was rather near a main trail and some human noise as well) it’s a good lesson that maximizing our strengths while recognizing and reducing the impacts of our weaknesses can help us to tackle challenges that would otherwise be unobtainable.

A pair of canadian geese and a female common goldeneye floating on a bend along the Elbow River. You can see how thick the ice still is in some places. • Coyote came out ahead in the poll yesterday and since it’s looking like more snow I think today will be an art day. Reference is one of my own and in stories (extremely cropped in).
