ONE CAMERA... and... a Macro lens

So you think you have run out of things to photograph. You have tried landscapes, portraits, maybe even pets... what to do next?
Take your new Macro lens into your own backyard and just pick a corner and look close at the plants and flowers. They are full of color and activity and the Macro will let you capture it. Macro... a fancy word that just means you can focus the lens at ridiculously close distances and capture incredible detail. Now, of course there is a little more to it than just point and shoot and I will get into that as part of my mentoring and coaching course that will be offered very soon. But for an afternoon of pure fun and exploration... you can't beat Macro photography.

Portrait of a Budding Photographer

I took my son out for a lesson on the use of filters and long exposure photography. I made a few images of the scene myself, but I couldn't help making a quick image of him at work as well. He's having fun with my old Olympus e-620.

Image made with my Olympus OM-D e-M5 mkI with the m.Zuiko 75mm f1.8 lens. Processed in On1 Photo RAW 18 beta3.

ONE CAMERA... and... a Telephoto zoom lens Ok, you are doing great! You have your new camera, kit lens ( usually a 16mm to 55mm ) and your "fast 50"mm lens. But you have noticed that you need a further reach to get some of the shots you want... more magnification. Now you want a Telephoto zoom lens. They usually range at about 70-200mm focal length and are great for capturing nature and sports events. This lens will also give you a completely different look when shooting portraits. They come in all shapes, sizes, quality.... and price. I will get deeper into what to look for in this type of lens when I start my online camera coaching program in the next month. So with this lens purchase you are now in possession of a camera system. You can now get very creative with your photography and start choosing not just location, lighting, exposure and posing but now also lens and focal length. You are no longer snapping pictures... you are creating photographs. Awesome.... and now look who " GOT THE SHOT" Yeh... it was you! brianmcnairphotography.com

ONE CAMERA... and... a "fast 50" So, you have had your new camera out and getting some great shots. You have a taste for the "capture"... now you want to try something new and different... portraits! Your kit lens isn't going to give you what you want for this type of image taking and this is why you bought a camera that can change lenses. The 50mm f1.8 should be your next purchase to start expanding into a camera system. Thankfully most manufacturers offer reasonably priced 50mm lenses so it should be an easy purchase. Now your kit lens is a zoom and the 50mm is called a prime lens... no zoom but much brighter and when used properly, it has a very shallow depth of field. The two photos here are both with the 50mm taken about a minute apart but the distance to the model was cut in half. See how the background is now out of focus and the model now has great separation from it. That is what the 50mm is great at... one lens two very different looks... awesome, right? It isn't the best portrait lens you can purchase, but it is a great and affordable first step into prime lenses and a different way to use your camera to get creative. I will be starting online coaching lessons in the coming months where I can guide new camera owners on how to navigate and explore their new hobby and get the most out of their equipment. Keep following my face book posts and please share them with people you think might want some help understanding this new digital lensing world. Help them say " GOT THE SHOT! ONE CAMERA... and... the kit lens

Ok great, you bought your first serious camera with descent megapixels and interchangeable lenses... now what? Well, it probably came with a small midrange zoom lens.... your kit lens. This is usually a reasonable quality lens that will allow you to get started shooting.
So this is a great time to go out and get to know your camera. Landscapes are a good place to start. But don't just shoot trees... test out your various settings and try for some dramatic and unusual lighting situations... even night photography. You will enjoy the challenge and be surprised by your results. Please contact me before you make your first purchase. There are so many cameras and prices and I can help you make an informed decision. One you can live with now and grow with later, as you add more lenses and expand your camera's abilities.
