This brings us to the Modified Thomas Test. Super quick, super simple. This test allows us to bias a specific muscle group depending on where we position the leg. The only trick is that you’ll likely need a partner to help you out.

👉🏼Start by positioning yourself like the picture above.
👉🏼Allow your leg to simply hang, note the position of the knee relative to the hip.
👉🏼Try to bend the knee a little bit, does the knee want to lift up? If so, there’s a chance the rectus femoris is at fault 👉🏼 Try to move the hip to the midline and away from the body. If it drops when it’s moved away from the body it’s likely an issue with the TFL (previous post)
👉🏼 if neither of these make a difference it’s likely that the psoas is the limiting factor
👉🏼 If the knee is resting below the level of the hip joint then it’s usually considered to be a normal test .

📝 You need to control the pelvic tilt when doing this test! Otherwise it simply isn’t reliable (Vigosky 2016)
